People expect feminist women to look masculine and feminist men to look feminine

Feminist women are visually stereotyped as more masculine while the opposite is true for feminist men, according to new research published in the journal Sex Roles. The researchers noted that feminist women are often derided for being unattractive or manly. Their study aimed to uncover whether it was “possible that these associations can be observed not only in the form of verbal stereotypes but also in the way people visually represent feminists at a fundamental, perceptual level?”

Europe is splitting the internet into three

Europe is splitting the internet into three

It’s strange to think about now, but until the 1920s, you didn’t generally need a passport to travel. A smart CEO I know recently mentioned this to me in the context of what’s happening to the internet. The idea of making citizens carry documents to promote border security, he said, dates only to the aftermath of World War I.

The US will need a lot more neodymium if it wants an offshore wind boom

The US will need a lot more neodymium if it wants an offshore wind boom

Magnets made of rare-earth metals like neodymium are commonly used in the generators found in offshore wind turbines. Turbines with neodymium magnets generally need less maintenance than those without them—an advantage when your turbine is a few miles out from land. But neodymium is costly, it almost all comes from China (which has restricted export in the past to drive prices up), and the environmental impact of extracting it from the Earth is not super.

Renewables ‘have won the race’ against coal and are starting to beat natural gas

Renewables ‘have won the race’ against coal and are starting to beat natural gas

The rapidly dropping cost of renewable energy has upended energy economics in recent years, with new solar and wind plants now significantly cheaper than coal power. Greenhouse gas emissions in UK fell 3% in 2018, official figures show

The UK’s greenhouse gas emissions fell 3% in 2018 as pollution from the energy sector continued to decrease, provisional government figures show. Emissions of the gases that drive climate change have fallen for six years in a row, and are 44% below the 1990 baseline for the UK. Emissions of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, are at the lowest level since before the start of the 20th century, when Queen Victoria was still on the throne, government officials said.

NASA Offering People $19,000 To Stay In Bed For Two Months

Do you want to make money, but never leave your bed? NASA just may have your dream job. According to CBS-affiliate WKMG, researchers and NASA and the European Space Agency are willing to pay 24 participants nearly $19,000 to spend 60 days in bed and monitored around the clock. The 24 participants will be separated into two groups, but housed in a single room. Each person will be propped up at an incline with their feet above their head, reducing blood flow to the extremities, mimicking the effects of being in space. This could, however, lead to numbness and muscle deterioration.
